A day at the swimming pool is a staple on most peoples’ list of favorite summertime activities.  It’s a fun way to enjoy time outdoors with friends and family, get exercise, and relax.  Pools can be fun and may seem harmless, but remember that germs and danger can hide unsuspected if not given the proper attention.  To prevent illness and injury, keep these pool health tips in mind the next time that you and your family decide to cool off.

DON’T SWIM ALONE
Ask a buddy to join you when swimming because you never know when an emergency might arise and you’ll need someone to assist you.  If possible, choose swimming sites that have lifeguards.

KEEP THE POOL AND POOLSIDE CLEAN
Germs can spread in a pool and make others’ sick.  Be sure that you and your children take a shower, wash hands, and practice easy sanitary habits to prevent germs from spreading before jumping in.  These practices could include washing up after changing diapers in an area away from the pool deck, checking diapers or taking your kids to the bathroom every 30-60 minutes, and staying out of the pool if you or your child is experiencing incontinence.

BASIC TIPS
Some other things to remember that might seem obvious but bears repeating include avoid drinking alcohol before and during swimming, don’t swallow pool water, make sure to keep your ears as dry as possible to help prevent swimmer’s ear, and most importantly, watch your children in and around the water at all times.
