During one of the hottest summers in years, Lawley’s Wellness Team wants to remind you to stay safe in the coming months. Whether you work in a hot environment, exercise outside during the day or are taking a summer vacation to a theme park, it is important to stay cool to avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body is not able to sweat enough to cool itself. When someone has symptoms of heat exhaustion he or she should be moved to a cooler place and drink plenty of water immediately. Symptoms include:
Weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache and vomiting
Blurry vision
Feeling hot and thirsty
Having difficulty speaking
Heat Stroke
Heat stroke is the result of untreated heat exhaustion. When someone is suffering from heat stroke, call medical personnel immediately, since this condition is life-threatening. Place ice packs on the person’s armpits and groin until help arrives. Symptoms of heat stroke include:
Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored cotton and linen clothing
Chill your pulse points — wrists, back of the neck, forehead, and temples — by cooling them with an ice cube or a cold compress. A wet bandanna around your neck works wonders if you’re planning to be outdoors for long periods of time
Choose the right mattress: Some memory foam mattresses are made with petrochemicals that create hot zones, but natural memory foam, like Stay Well™ mattresses, “sleep cool” — which means a cooler, more comfortable night’s rest
Eat smaller meals. The more you eat, the more heat you generate, since metabolic processes in the body burn fuel to generate heat.
Stay hydrated with fruits, vegetables, and plenty of water. When you’re well hydrated, your body makes a good sweat, and the job of sweat is to cool you down
Consider using an interior fan along with your air conditioner to spread cool air throughout your home
