Put On the Brake in Work Zones!

Summer road construction season is here! Unfortunately, you are more likely to have an accident because of another driver’s behavior than for any other reason. Don’t make a fatal mistake by driving too fast in a construction zone, because signs and barricades can greatly affect how drivers travel though work zones. Thankfully, working men and women just like you are putting their lives on the line by working so close to moving traffic!

Follow these tips to help improve your safety, and the safety of construction workers, when you are driving through construction zones.

  • Stay alert by watching out for workers and road blocks.
  • Use the “Take 10” technique for changing lanes. If there is a ‘lane closed ahead’ sign, put on your turn signal at least three seconds before starting a lane change and at least seven seconds to complete the lane change, while being aware of your surroundings.
  • Expect delays! Speed limits may be reduced.
  • When you enter a construction zone or see that one is approaching, turn down (or turn off) your radio, end any cell phone calls, and keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
  • Use time management to plan out your routes in order to arrive at your destination on time.
  • The most common car crash involve rear-end collisions. Keep at least a car space ahead in between you and the driver in front of you.
