Drinking Responsibly
Everyone enjoys taking the time to have a drink with family and friends. However, it can be difficult to know how much is too much. These tips will help you drink responsibly and stay safe.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

If you choose to drink responsibly, it can be hard to know if you’re overdoing it. Use the simple one-to-one rule and limit yourself to one standard drink per hour. The American Dietetic Association defines a standard drink as one of the following:

  • One 12-ounce beer
  • One 5-ounce glass of wine
  • One mixed drink with 1.5 ounces of liquor

If you serve alcohol at a party, keep these tips in mind to keep your guests safe:

  • Always measure the amount of alcohol mixed into drinks so guests can gauge how much they’re consuming
  • Don’t let your guests drink and drive. Arrange for a ride with a safe driver or make them stay until they sober up
  • Remember that coffee, a cold shower and fresh air aren’t cures for intoxication

Helpful Hints

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2 out of 3 people will be involved in a drunk-driving crash at some point in their lives. Make sure to celebrate responsibly— your safety and the safety of others depends on your good judgement.
